TMAX Volunteers Visit Mountain Primary School: "Tool Classroom" Teaches Children About Gardening Tools and Cultivates Environmental Awareness

Before the morning mist had even dissipated, TMAX volunteers were already on the winding mountain road. When the vehicle carrying child-safe gardening tools stopped at the entrance of the Hope Primary School nestled in the mountain valley, the children clinging to the fence erupted in cheers, waving their little hands, covered in mud. That day, the volunteers were holding a special "Tool Classroom," allowing the children to learn about gardening tools and understand the meaning of environmental protection while getting close to nature.

"This isn't a woodcutter's axe!" Fifth-grader Xiaoyu clutched the Pruning Shears handed to her by a volunteer, correcting them earnestly, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. The volunteer crouched down and pointed to an old peach tree by the playground, following her finger: "These are pruning shears, specially used to 'give' trees a haircut, making them grow more vibrant." The class wasn't confined to the classroom; the volunteers led the children into the grove behind the school, connecting the tools with the surrounding vegetation.

During the hands-on activity, the children's reactions were exceptionally lively. At first, Xiaomin, with her ponytail, held the small rake hesitantly, afraid of damaging the clover beneath her feet; A boy named Amin, eager to show off, chased after butterflies with a watering can, splashing water everywhere. The volunteers didn't criticize them, but instead demonstrated how to gently rake away fallen leaves, explaining that "fallen leaves return to the roots and become fertilizer," and teaching everyone that giving the saplings "the right amount of water" is true care.

As sunlight filtered through the treetops, the children were already engrossed in their work. Amin squatted in front of the rose bushes, carefully using pruning shears to cut off withered buds, muttering, "Leave nutrients for the new buds"; Xiaoyu and her friends used small shovels to add soil to the saplings, checking the volunteers' gestures after each shovel stroke. When they saw someone carelessly breaking branches, several children immediately gathered around: "The teacher said trees feel pain, and we need to use tools to prune them scientifically."

The most touching part was the sharing session. The children held up their self-made "plant name cards," on which they had crookedly written the tree species and protection methods. “I used to think we couldn’t cut down all the trees on the mountain, but now I know they are our friends,” Amin said earnestly, touching the peach tree he had pruned. The volunteers also brought flowerpots made from recycled tools, telling the children that “saving and reusing are also ways to protect the environment.”

As the sun set and the volunteers were leaving, the children chased after the car, presenting it with paper bags filled with wild chrysanthemums. On the car windows were drawings by the children: small pruning shears and shovels protecting sprouting saplings, with the words “We are the guardians of the forest” written beside them.

This little tool lesson, without complicated theories, allowed the seeds of environmental protection to take root through hands-on work. The TMAX volunteers brought not only tools and knowledge, but also taught the children that protecting the green mountains and clear waters of their hometown begins with the correct use of pruning shears and cherishing every fallen leaf. And these green hopes planted in the mountains will eventually grow into towering trees.
